Quick growing deciduous tree that withstands hot, dry conditions and cold to about -10 degrees F. Reaches 30-45 feet high and 25-45 feet wide.

Pyramidal when young, spreading and more open when mature. Leaves are divided into three to five narrow to oval leaflets, 3 inches long. Male and female flowers on separate trees. The species occurs along streams and in canyons, ranging from c. California to Baja California, Nevada and Arizona.
